There are three distinct paint horse coat coloration patterns that are recognized by the Ameriacan Paint Horse Association: Tobiano, Overo and Tovero.
Tobiano Paint Horses generally have solid colored faces with large, rounded, smooth-edged markings on their bodies. Tobiano horses generally have legs that are predominantly white.
Overo Paint Horses generally have white faces and display markings with irregular or lacy edges. Their legs tend to display their dark base coat color instead of white patches.
Tovero Paint Horses often have dark base-coat colored markings around their ears or mouths as well as at the base of their tails and on their chests. Many Tovero Paint Horses have blue eyes, or one blue eye and one brown eye.
Horses that exhibit painted coat patterns but aren’t descended from Thoroughbreds, American Paint Horses or American Quarter Horses are generally eligible for registration with the Pinto Horse Association of America.
