A trip to the NC state zoo

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

Tammy and I took a trip to the zoo to visit the Austrailian Walkabout exhibit before the kangaroos and wallabies went home. The animals were napping, but we got to see them lounging about in the shade.

On the way home, we stopped by an Apple Festival and checked all of the apple goodies for sale. We’re hoping our apple trees will have a great fall growing season and start to produce soon!

Praying Mantids abound at Blue Horizon Farm

Saturday, September 23rd, 2006

Our farm is host to wealth of interesting insects and wildliife. Today I caught a picture of this praying mantis. There are several varieties of praying mantis, before we moved here, I had never seen one that onesn’t just a bright green. This “camo” mantis is common around here in addition to the green ones.

Topsail Island Trip

Thursday, September 21st, 2006

This past weekend, Tammy and I took a break from the farm and went to Topsail Island. The weather was beautiful and the water was still warm enough to take a swim.

After playing in the waves, we went out on the pier and watched the fishermen. The majority of folks were catching Spot using bloodworms as bait. There were a few people fishing for King Mackerel, but none had any luck while we were there.

Yummy Peanut Brittle

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

We got a shipment of peanut brittle today from Big Dipper Food. Actually, we got both a peanut and a cashew brittle. Tammy and I both enjoyed it thoroughly.

We’ve never tasted fresh peanut brittle and it was a treat! The brittle I’ve always had from the store has always tasted a little stale.

The product was also all natural and free of any artificial flavors or preservatives — a blessing for Tammy’s delicate stomach.
