Heritage days at Cedarock park!

Sunday, August 27th, 2006

Today, Tammy and I visited the Cedarock park in Burlington, NC.  The park is a wonderful place to visit with frisbee golf, horse trails, working historical farm, fishing ponds and hiking trails.  This weekend, the farm hosted the Heritage days event.  There was an antique car show, a honey bee demonstration, music, and crafts. The band

Tammy was eyeing the “machine gun” car — she’d love to try it out against tailgaters! Nothing says back-off like a rear mounted machine gun.  Machinegun Car!

A trip to the historic Alamance Battleground

Sunday, August 27th, 2006

Tammy and I took a trip to the Alamance Battleground Park. Road Sign marker

Alamance Battleground was the site of the “first battle of the American Revolution”. The battle was fought between the governement, lead by Governor Tryon and the Regulators. The Regulators were protesting against the high taxes and corruption in the government.

At the park, we also visited the historic Allen house. The historic Allen House

This log house was in use into the early 1900’s. The park guide told us that there are still three Alamance residents who were born in the house!

North Carolina’s Small Farm Unit

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

DSC_0140.jpgWhile it wasn’t a fun escape from the farm life, Tammy and I took a trip to CEFS (Center for Environmental Farming Systems) where we saw a small farm tillage demonstration.  Bryan Green and Ken Fager demonstrated methods to knock down cover crops (helical roller, flail mower, and tiller), prepare seeed beds, and suppress weeds.

CEFS is in the Sandhills region of North Carolina in Goldsboro.  It’s about 90 minutes from the house, so it kind of qualifies as an out and about session.

We got lots of pictures of the event so Tammy can show her students in the Soil Science class.

Golf extravaganza!

Friday, August 4th, 2006

Well, it wasn’t much of an extravaganza. We had a produce delivery at Chapel Ridge this morning, so afterwards, we practiced our putting on their practice green. We were hoping to hit some balls at the range, but the range wasn’t open yet. So, we zipped down the street to a local driving range where we hit a few balls.

Dave and Tammy at Literary Open Mike Night

Thursday, August 3rd, 2006

Tonight we stopped in at McIntrye’s Books in Fearringtonton Village for their Literary Open Mike night. We left early, but had the chance to hear three artists’ tales. The first was the introduction of a novella set in Philadelphia.

Next, we heard a semi-pornographic adventure. The funny thing about the tale was that the author was an 85-year old man, whose wife was in attendence!

Lastly, we heard poetry from a New Orleans native.
